  • What's Up With Me, BTP

    What's up with me, BTP?

Well don't fall over. Yes, it's me. And I'm online. At least for today and tomorrow. Then life gets crazy again.

I don't have any one thing to write a post about, but I thought I'd let you know what's going on. Here goes...

    The Gift

We came home last night (we were away for 4 days) to find a mailer tube on our front doorstep. It was addressed to Big Toe People! How thrilling. Yes, it was the fruits of "The Make-It Game" or the pay it forward game. Click here and look at the first work of art...it's now mine, thanks to the generosity and talent of Rojobe. My husband and I love it. Rojobe did it while traveling in China. It's going to go beautifully in our "Japanese dining room" (named that way for the dining table, but the rest of the room is Japanese, Korean and Chinese art). I wish we could have Rojobe and his lovely wife to dinner so they could enjoy his work in our home. What an amazing gift we've received!!!

    The Kitten

My dogs and I came home from our morning exercise walk to find a tiny little newborn kitten in our front yard. Its eyes weren't even open. I thought it was dead at first. Because our dogs are cat chasers, I got them inside as quickly as I could...but not before they sniffed it. The kitten responded to our dogs as if it were looking for its mom. I skipped pilates to figure out what to do. I put it in a cardboard box with an old Tshirt from our rag pile. I gave it a sushi dish of milk. It was too young to eat on its own. It cried a lot while I got ready for work, and my extreme-cat-chaser, Midori, was worried. She hopped up on the bed and sat over the baby as if to take care of it. When it cried a lot, Midori whimpered. Oh, I can't wait to have children of my own. Midori is such a good nanny dog. There was no cat chaser in her at all, just compassion. On my way to work, I tried to drop the kitten at our vet's. I thought they'd take in a helpless one like this. They wouldn't take the kitten. I understand that now. But I was on my way to work and couldn't hang out long enough for them to teach me how to do the every-three-hours feeding and how to help it go potty?!?! They said they'd keep it just today until I got off work, then teach me those skills, and then I'm on my own. I'd like to throttle the owner of the pregnant cat! Instead, I guess I'll go door-to-door in the neighborhood to try to figure out whose cat it was and possibly find this kitten a home. It can't live with us...first, because I'm about to start every-other-day drives to civilization and won't be able to give it regular feedings and secondly because Steve and I and his entire side of the family are allergic to cats. Kitteh needs a home. It's so cute...a teeny little gray tabby that can rest easily in my hand.

    The Absentee Xangan

Yes, that's the other item I need to tell you guys. I'm going to be woefully behind on your lives. Starting Wed/Thurs, I'm supposed to expect to drive up and down to the doctor in civilization to have my fertility monitored closely. Yes. I will be gone a lot and listening to a ton of audio books.

    Kids & Fireworks

We had a wonderful 4th of July with one of my brothers, his wife and two little boys (the kids who look like Japanese anime). I'm not really into fireworks. I actually cried at a DC fireworks display when I was in college because I realized how much money went into it and how many homeless people there were in DC. I now know that there's no price to national morale, but I never really recovered a love of fireworks since then. But. We saw an amazing fireworks show on that trip. Try watching something like that with a 3yr old and a 1yr old and you'd love it too. I love seeing the world through little eyes!

    The Tortilla Chips

I can't believe I'm going to tell this story, but here goes. Friday night, I went to the WalMart grocery store with my sister-in-law. They live in a lake district with lots of camp grounds and lake houses and such (my bro is a park ranger). The store was really picked over. Go figure, the Friday night before everyone's 4th of July celebration. Mmy sister in law wanted a package of ground pork sausage for one of our breakfasts. She had trouble finding it until she noticed a huge refrigerator case, nearly empty, with 2 packages of pork sausage left. Now repeat that experience for half the grocery list. So later in the shopping, my sister in law got inspired to make homemade salsa. Yum. I offered to hunt up some of the ingredients for her, and she sent me to get the tortilla chips. There's 1 brand my brother and she like, so she told me the name and I went on my quest. I searched the chip aisle back and forth a few times. Nuthin'. Then I spotted it. In a nearly-empty section, there was one bag. It was on the top shelf. Way at the back. Now I'm tall, but I could barely reach the top shelf, let alone the back of that shelf. But I had to have that bag. My brother's salsa is too important to go without. I noticed the shelves looked really solid, so I tested it to be sure it was firm. It was strong, so up I went onto the second-from-bottom shelf. The bag of chips was so far back on the shelf that I had to lean across the top shelf before my fingertips reached it. With the front of the wire/metal shelf in my armpit, I got a grasp on the corner of the bag. Just at that very moment, the shelf I was standing on gave way. Yes, I fell. The wire shelf scraped the heck out of my armpit...like skinning your knee except it's not my knee. There was only one person in that aisle when it happened. She was a pretty little blonde lady who pretended like she didn't see a thing. I felt like such a fool...I should have seen that coming! I walked quicklly with my head down and the chips in hand until I found my sister in law. I was SO embarrassed, but darn proud of those chips!

    Rain

We had rain last week. So much that my boss sent me home early. I thought it was so lovely when I pulled into our driveway that I got out and took pictures of the crepe myrtle archway in the rain.

That picture is stunning! Sounds like you are going to have a time of it in the future. Fingers crossed it all works out for you.

  • Luvlystarr

    Aww I love kittens!

  • Amarisa

There is a lot in this post, and a lot to comment on!

First off, that is some beautiful artwork.  What a great gift!

I used to really like cats, and we had quite a few when I was a kid, but somewhere along the way I became allergic to them.  It's so awful:  headache, sneezing, rash.  Ugh.

If you don't mind me asking, how is your fertility being monitored?  Are you seeing a Creighton doc?  Best of luck to you, dear.

The only thing new with me is that I'm filling a big jewelry order for a client in Kerrville.  She sent me about 20 very long necklaces and wants me to restyle them into other necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.  It's slow going, but the pieces are turning out beautifully!

  • DanishDoll

I love the chip story! Hope that arm pit heals up soon! I am 4'10'' so I would never be able to reach them! I always look helpless and ask someone tall!   Hope your foundling survives and you can find it a good home.

  • TheCheshireGrins

Poor kitty! I wonder who would leave the kitten all alone??? It's lucky that it happened to be found by you guys.

I still need to work on my pay it forward gifts. Unfortunately I'm in the throws of midterms right now so I'm hoping to have them out sometime this month! I don't believe I have your address. Could you message it to me?

Good luck with all of your drives :)

  • BigToePeople

@TheCheshireGrins - I think the momma kitty must have dropped it and run off. Steve said he heard cats outside the house...maybe she had the whole litter in our yard and got all but one home safely. Not sure. Will message you with my address.

@DanishDoll - Glad you got a laugh out of my foolishness. The armpit is already better! It was much better within hours, and this morning I couldn't even see where it scraped. It looked angry and red on Friday!

    @Luvlystarr - That's a gorgeous new profile pic!

    @AnamcharaConcepts - Thanks

aaww poor little baby kitty. My oldest would love to take it and raise it he is the one for that. But sadly we are too far away. I guess being tall you can get away with things like reaching for things on shelves. I am sorry to hear you hurt  yourself. I am glad you got the chips. For me I just stand around and wait till someone tall comes by to rescue me and get me whatever it is on the top shelf I can't reach. :) It usually ends up being a really tall guy with a girlfriend that glares at me the whole time he is helping me.

I hope all goes well and you find that in no time you are pregnant and expecting a beautiful baby.

Have a relaxing and good time.

@Amarisa - Hi. No, I'm not seeing a Creighton doc. Is that the Catholic-approved fertility system? I've heard the name, but I'm not sure what the context was. I'm going to Wilford Hall, a nationally-renowned fertility clinic run by the Air Force. I have the benefit of their expertise until I turn 41 in Feb. Then I have to go to civilian docs and we have to pay for it out of pocket. It's sort of hard wading through the medical options while trying to keep things to partnering with God (as opposed to playing God) when the doctors are medical without sharing our faith. But the clinic is really good and we're happy so far. Right now, they have ramped up my meds aggressively because IUI's didn't work in all 3 attempts. Because of the aggression in the meds, they'll be doing ultrasounds on me frequently to make sure that I'm responding well. They also want to keep down the chance of multiple births...that's something they'd do for every patient, but I'm especially concerned because of my fibroid surgery...having multiples could mean my uterus would tear at the old incisions. I'd love to know more about the Creighton stuff if we have no luck by Feb.

  • BigToePeople

@Amarisa - PS - Kerrville is relatively close to us.

  • BigToePeople

@alterEGGO - I'd love to UPS the kitty to your son. Maybe if we can't find a home...

  • guestbrief

Aw man, just when you need to relax there's all this driving back and forth!!?? I hope some of those audio books are relaxing ones!! Blessings!  Did you see my 5 most cherished.... last post? Thanks for the note on the roses! I thought the plastic one was fascinating too, esp. the banana!! lol

  • BigToePeople

@guestbrief - I'm going to visit your post now!

  • firefighterswife

    Hey Girl,

I am happy to know all that is happening in your life! You are keeping very busy, and it sounds like it will be even more busy with all the trips to the docs!!! I wish I lived near ya, I would make those trips with ya!

  • BigToePeople

@firefighterswife - That would have been fun to have you along for the drive.

  • UnworthyofHisgrace

I did a post on Commitment I'd love to get your take on. I didn't have time to read your whole post, hopefully I can get back. Hope you find that kitten a home. How are things going with you and everything? Gotta run.

  • twoboycrazy

So cute!  We  had a similar experience with kittens, only there were four of them in my shed!  I let the boys cuddle them for a while, and then put them back and the mommy came back and got them and took them away. 2 weeks later she brought one back to us but we had to get rid of it because I'm allergic.  They were SOOO cute.  I hope you find a home.  You should probably find someone who raises them or rescues them.  That's what I had to end up doing.

  • twoboycrazy

You might want to see if them mommy cat comes back. I've been told repeatedly in the past that kittens should not be separated from their mommy until a certain age, and that the mommy will come back for her baby if you give her a chance and put the baby back where you found it.

  • BigToePeople

@UnworthyofHisgrace - I read your post as you were commenting here! Good post. Had to rec it.

@twoboycrazy - I wish I'd let the kitty stay outside as I got ready for work in case the mommy came back. I didn't know that until a friend called and advised that (I'd called her because she knows cats and is an animal rescuer in the same vein as me). I put the kitty back outside for about 20min after the friend called. The vet's office said that, if the mommy hadn't come back, the kitty wouldn't have made it through the day if I'd left it. Now he has a fighting chance.

@UnworthyofHisgrace - @twoboycrazy - I've been meaning to post all day but I'm busy at work...a friend found the kitty a foster home! I was able to deliver the newborn to the foster person at the end of the day. Phew! I wager they'll keep the kitten if it survives, but we'll see.

  • FreeeVerse

Heee, I had to giggle at the chips story. But I bet the scraping of the armpit was painful! I'm sorry that happened.

  • BigToePeople

@bella_esperanza - My dad jokingly calls such injuries "stupidity bumps." It was my own fault. It stung a lot for about an hour and then healed nearly over night.

  • leannenannette

Oh no!!!  (to the tortilla chip story)  That had to be painful!  That is a sensitive area.

Yay for the rain!  Although I no longer appreciate it very much anymore.  During the school year I don't since I have to walk to class in the rain now, and during the summer I don't because then I have to stay inside with the kids.

Beautiful painting!  I went to see it!  How fun to find that on your doorstep!

  • BigToePeople

@leannenannette - I think my pride and sensibilities were hurt more than my armpit! What was amazing was that it looked pretty bad...bright red and scraped up... when it happened. But it healed practically overnight!

  • leannenannette

@BigToePeople - I'm so glad it healed quickly!
